Fear:
- Fear occurs as a natural response to a specific danger or threat.
- It is usually momentary and temporary.
- Fear is an evolutionarily developed response to ensure survival or safety.
- Fear is often associated with situations in which the person is under direct threat.
- For example, there's a type of fear, such as the fear of heights, that occurs when you approach a dangerous place. However, the fear subsides as you move away from the danger.
Phobia:
- A phobia is an excessive and unreasonable fear or anxiety about a particular object, situation or activity.
- Phobia can negatively impact a person's daily life and disrupt normal functioning.
- Phobic reactions can occur without exposure to danger.
- A phobia usually occurs as a learned response. A person may develop this fear response when they have or witness a negative experience associated with a particular object or situation.
- Phobias can come in many different types, such as spider phobia, flying phobia, and claustrophobia.
In short, fear usually occurs as a natural reaction and is usually in response to the presence of a specific danger, while phobia is an excessive and irrational fear of a specific object or situation and often interferes with the person's normal life.
