EMDR Session / EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Don't let past events control your feelings today.
EMDR is an abbreviation for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
At Pearl Therapy, EMDR is one of the powerful therapeutic methods used to work with intense emotions, fears, anxieties, and subconscious connections left behind by past events.
The event is over, but are its effects still lingering?
Sometimes the event ended years ago.
But the body and mind still react as if the event had actually happened.
- Your heart may race when you remember it.
- You might feel anxious.
- Fear may set in.
- Anger may resurface.
- Images may come to mind.
- You might want to avoid a similar environment.
- The thought "It will happen again" might arise.
The goal of EMDR is not to erase the past memory, but to work on the intense emotional burden that memory creates in the present.

The root causes of the problem are identified in the first session. Next, it is determined which memory, emotion, and subconscious connection EMDR will be used on.
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
In Turkish:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
In EMDR, the person focuses on a distressing memory for short periods.
Simultaneously, the child follows the left-right eye movements directed by the therapist.
Some applications may also use left-right tapping or other bilateral stimulation methods.
The goal isn't to erase the memory, but to help reprocess the intense fear, anxiety, anger, guilt, or other emotional baggage it carries.
What problems can EMDR be used for?
EMDR is best known for its effect on intense emotions linked to past events.
Traumatic Events
The emotional burden left by accidents, assaults, losses, or other traumatic events can be addressed through research.
Fears and Phobias
Past experiences that trigger or intensify fear can be addressed with EMDR.
Anxiety
The expectation of "it will happen again" and intense anxiety related to past experiences can be worked on.
Panic Experiences
The initial panic experience, or subsequent events that amplify the fear, can be considered as target moments.
Wounds from Past Relationships
The impact of events such as breakups, infidelity, rejection, being made to feel worthless, or loss of trust can be addressed.
Self-esteem issues
Past experiences that have led to beliefs such as "I am inadequate," "I can't succeed," and "I am worthless" can be explored.
Grief and Loss
It is possible to work with particularly intense and persistent images or emotions related to the loss.
Exam and Performance Anxiety
Past experiences of failure, embarrassment, or intense stress can be targeted if they are affecting current performance.
How is EMDR performed?
EMDR is not just about moving your eyes from side to side.
First, it is necessary to correctly determine what needs to be studied.
1. The target moment is selected.
The event or image that most triggers today's problem is identified.
2. Emotion is Determined
When one looks back at the memory, one notices the fear, anger, sadness, guilt, or other emotions that come with it.
3. Negative beliefs are present.
Thoughts such as "I am not safe," "I am inadequate," or "I am guilty" can be identified in relation to that moment.
4. Noticeable Sense of Body
The focus is on where in the body the emotion is felt.
5. Left-Right Stimulation Begins
The client focuses briefly on the target memory while following the eye movements directed by the therapist.
6. Newcomers are monitored.
The process continues as new images, thoughts, feelings, or memories emerge.
How to Choose the Target Moment in EMDR?
You don't always start with the biggest event.
The link that most fuels today's problem is found.
A therapist might look into the following areas:
- When did this problem first start?
- What was the worst moment?
- What triggers you the most today?
- What image comes to mind when you think about that moment?
- What do you think about yourself?
- What feeling comes to mind?
- Where in the body is this feeling experienced?
- Which past event does today's event resemble?
When the right target is chosen, therapy directly addresses the connection that fuels the problem.
The 8 Basic Stages of EMDR
The standard EMDR approach is described in eight basic stages.
1. Understanding the History and the Problem
The current issue, past experiences, and key triggers are discussed.
2. Preparation
The client is informed about how the EMDR session will proceed, and the necessary preparations for the session are made.
3. Evaluation
The target image, emotion, negative belief, desired positive belief, and body sensation are determined.
4. Desensitization
Bilateral stimulation (left-right) is applied while focusing on the target memory, and emotional intensity is monitored.
5. Strengthening Positive Belief
The goal is to strengthen positive thoughts such as "I am safe now" and "I can cope."
6. Body Scan
When the memory is considered, it is assessed whether an unpleasant sensation still remains in the body.
7. Closing
The session is completed in a safe and balanced manner.
8. Re-evaluation
In the next meeting, the intensity of the previous objective will be reassessed.

You can participate from different parts of the world.
Face-to-face EMDR
This is done at the Pearl Therapy center.
The therapist and client work in the same environment.
Eye movements and other appropriate EMDR techniques are guided by the therapist.
You can determine which format suits you best during your appointment.
What can change with an EMDR session?
The goal of EMDR is not to erase memories.
But the impact of that memory today may change.
It can trigger the memory less.
When the same event is recalled, the emotion may be less intense.
The image can be perceived from a greater distance.
Some people may find that the memory feels less vivid or more distant.
Body response may decrease.
The tightness, tension, or intense bodily reaction that comes with the memory may lessen.
Negative beliefs can be changed.
Old associations like "I'm not safe" or "I'm powerless" can be replaced by more functional thoughts.
Today's trigger may weaken.
Reactions to present-day situations and events can vary depending on past experiences.
The event can remain in the past.
The person knows the event happened, but may not feel as if it's happening again today.
Why Pearl Therapy for EMDR Sessions?
Not Just Eye Movement
First, the specific event and subconscious connection that needs to be addressed is identified.
Subconscious-Based Approach
The origins of today's reaction are investigated.
Holistic in every aspect.

Scientific Research on EMDR
EMDR is one of the therapy methods that has been scientifically researched for many years.
Most research has been conducted in the area of post-traumatic stress.
There are also studies in the following areas:
- Anxiety
- Panik
- Phobias
- Depression symptoms
- traumatic memories
- The vividness and emotional intensity of the memories
Scientific studies generally show that EMDR can be effective, especially for post-traumatic stress symptoms.
The studies have different results, methods, and evidentiary strengths.
1. 2026 – EMDR in PTSD: A Meta-Analysis of 11 Randomized Studies
Eleven randomized controlled trials published between 2000 and 2024 were evaluated together. EMDR was found to be associated with a greater reduction in post-traumatic stress symptoms compared to control groups. The difference was smaller when compared to active treatments.
2. 2026 – EMDR and Waiting List: 12 RCTs, 690 Participants
A meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials and 690 participants reported a reduction in PTSD symptoms in adults receiving EMDR. The certainty of evidence was assessed as low to very low based on the results.
3. 2023 – EMDR in PTSD: 18 Studies, 1.213 People
Eighteen studies published between 1991 and 2022, involving 1.213 individuals, were evaluated. Reductions in symptoms associated with PTSD, anxiety, and depression were reported following EMDR therapy. Differences in the quality of methodology across the studies were particularly noted.
4. 2020 – EMDR and Mental Health Issues: A Meta-Analysis of 76 Studies
76 randomized studies were reviewed together. The majority of studies focused on post-traumatic stress. EMDR was generally associated with positive outcomes compared to control conditions; there were significant differences between studies.
5. 2020 – EMDR in Anxiety Disorders: 17 Studies, 647 Participants
A meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials and 647 participants found that EMDR was associated with a reduction in anxiety, panic, phobias, and some behavioral/physical symptoms. Further research was noted for long-term results.
6. 2024 – EMDR in Depression: 25 Studies, 1.042 Participants
A meta-analysis examining EMDR for depression included 25 studies and 1.042 participants. Reduction in depressive symptoms with EMDR was reported. Variables influencing the effect and differences between studies were also analyzed.
7. 2021 – EMDR in Depression: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
The meta-analysis, which examined controlled studies where depression was the primary target, included 9 studies and 373 participants. Results favoring EMDR in depressive symptoms were reported; there was high variability between studies.
8. 2018 – Comparison of EMDR and CBT: PTSD Meta-Analysis
A meta-analysis comparing EMDR and cognitive behavioral therapy for PTSD evaluated 14 studies. Some differences were seen in trauma and anxiety outcomes after treatment, favoring EMDR; however, the difference in trauma symptoms at three-month follow-up was not statistically significant.
9. 2013 – Contribution of Eye Movements: Meta-Analysis with 849 Participants
A meta-analysis combining 15 clinical trials and 11 laboratory studies examined the additional contribution of eye movements in EMDR to the processing of disturbing memories. Eye movements were reported to have a significant contribution, particularly in reducing the vividness of the memory.

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR
1. What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is used to work on the intense emotional baggage that past events create in the present.
2. Is EMDR only used for trauma?
No. Trauma is the most researched area. It can also be used for anxiety, fear, phobias, panic, depressive symptoms, and various other problems related to past events.
3. Do the eyes really move from side to side during EMDR therapy?
Yes. The therapist can give right-left movements that the client can follow with their eyes. This is called bilateral stimulation.
4. Does EMDR erase past memories?
No. The person will continue to remember the event. But the goal is to reduce the intense fear, anxiety, or other emotional response that the memory evokes.
5. What happens in the first session?
In the first session, the root causes of the problem are identified. Past events that fuel the current problem and target memories that can be worked on with EMDR are determined.
6. Can EMDR be done online?
Yes. In appropriate situations, EMDR can be performed online via video call. Eye movements or bilateral stimulation that the client can apply themselves can be used.
7. Is it necessary to describe the event in full detail during EMDR therapy?
It is not necessary to explain every detail at length. Sufficient information is gathered about the target memory, emotions, and connections so that the therapist can guide the work.
8. Has EMDR been scientifically researched?
Yes. There are numerous randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses on EMDR. The strongest area of research is post-traumatic stress symptoms.
9. How many EMDR sessions are needed?
The type of problem, the number of target memories involved, and the individual's progress in sessions all vary. Therefore, the exact number of sessions is not given to everyone.
